Training Information:

          The Orton-Gillingham approach is the grandfather of all programs now called structured literacy. It is an approach to teaching language skills that follows several principles; chiefly, it is direct, structured, sequential, cumulative, and multisensory. Phonological awareness, phonics, syllables and syllable division, spelling rules, and morphology are taught explicitly. Additionally, at the Associates Level, strategies for teaching reading comprehension, grammar, writing, and vocabulary are also covered.  Although this approach to teaching reading and spelling is crucial for students with dyslexia, it is appropriate and encouraged for teaching literacy skills to all students. Nancy conducts trainings which can lead to certification in Orton-Gillingham Academy for teachers/tutors who choose to participate in optional practicums. Training can also lead to CERI certification through the International Dyslexia Association.

 

Trainings might be in person or online. On-line trainings consist of webinars and quizzes which can be completed independently, and live zoom sessions daily on class days. Live trainings are five days for OGCE level and eight or nine days for Associates level.  
 
The Classroom Educator level is appropriate for teachers who work in schools, either in classrooms or small groups. This level requires a minimum of 30 hours of training. Nancy’s CE trainings are usually five days, for a total of 35 or 40 training hours.

 

The Associate level is appropriate both for teachers working in schools, but also those doing 1:1 work in a private setting. Associate Level trainings are generally completed in 2 sessions for a total of 8 or 9 days.  The total number of training hours for this level is 70 hours.

Classroom Educator Level

This course covers the OGA curriculum for Classroom Educator Level for those working in a school setting.  The OGCE course introduces individuals to the principles of the Orton-Gillingham approach and provides the knowledge base for individuals to deliver OG lessons in small group or classroom settings. It does not include a practicum which is required for Academy membership. The 50-hour practicum can be arranged on request after the coursework is completed.

 

Nancy Redding is an approved literacy instructor for the State of California for her Classroom Educator level training.  Each year she conducts open trainings, but is often hired by a school district, school, or organization to conduct OGCE courses at the school.  To find out more about that option, please complete the contact form below or email Nancy at:  Nancy.c.redding@gmail.com

Nancy will be scheduling her next OGCE open training, to be held in San Jose, CA, in June 2027.  This will be a hybrid course, with 5 days in person (35 hours) and 5 hours of independent work to be completed before or after the course.

 

Areas covered in OGCE are:

• The Reading Brain; Dyslexia and reading disorders

• Rationale for structured literacy, in particular the OG Approach

• Phonology and phonological/phonemic awareness

• The motor component, orthography of English, and writing process

• Basic and Intermediate phonics for reading and spelling

• The OG lesson plans and teaching materials

• General history of the English language and beginning morphology

• Informal Assessment and diagnostic-prescriptive teaching

• Instruction in accuracy, automaticity and fluency for reading and spelling

• Additional instructional considerations appropriate for the English Learner

Associates Level

​

This course covers the OGA curriculum for Associates Level (70 hours) for teachers or tutors. It is taught in 2 sessions: Trainees can attend the 5 day in-person training in June or another OGCE course at a school, and then complete the remainder of the Associates level training online in August.  For this course there will be several additional hours of independent work.

 

This course introduces individuals to the principles of the Orton-Gillingham approach and follows the curriculum at the Associates Level. It provides the knowledge base for individuals to deliver OG lessons either in small groups or 1:1. It does not include a practicum which is required for Academy membership. The practicum can be arranged on request after the coursework is completed.
